Back to School Computer Checklist

Getting your computer is just the beginning of having a complete system. Use our checklist to make sure you pick up any additional peripherals and supplies you may need.

Peripherals

Printer - Avoid long lines at the computer labs when you just want to print your paper. You can get a multi-function inkjet printer for under $100, and a laser printer for under $200.

iPod - Use it to record lectures (with a voice recorder), keep track of your class schedule, listen to music or watch videos at the gym, and catch up on podcasts, including iTunes U.

Extra Storage - Protect your files from a system crash by buying an external hard drive.

Essential Basics

Ethernet Cable - ResNet hookups require a RJ45 patch cable.

iPod - Most printers don't include a USB cable.

Power - A standard power strip may not protect you from power surges.

Extra Storage - Protect your valuable investment.

Software

Office Suite - Everybody has to write papers! Make sure to pick up an office suite, which includes 3 or 4 programs for the price of 2.

Security Software - There are a lot of scams on the Internet, so protect your identity and privacy.

Software for your Major - Contact your department to see if they recommend any other products, such as AutoCad, Creative Suite, or Avid.

Wireless

Wireless Card - Take advantage of USC's wireless network when you are away from your room.

Router - If you're living off campus, you could set up your own wireless network.

Extra Supplies

Black CD-Rs/DVD-Rs - Backup your work!

Extra Printer Cartridges and Paper - Don't run out of supplies!

Laptop Case - Carry it in style!

Headphones - Let your roommate sleep!
